Meet the Team

hi guys!

Laura – owner / director

How old were you when you started knitting?

I don’t remember learning, so quite young. I took knitting up again in earnest in about 2008.

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

Wool shop peoples are my peoples! I love the chat and creativity of working in such a great place.

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

I have two WIPs on the go- Camilla Vad’s Dipdye sweater and Boyland Knitworks Camp Wilkerson shawl.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

Oooh so tough… Depends on my mood. I’m going to say Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Fave pudding?

I LOVE Bakewell tart!

Becki – Assistant Manager

How old were you when you started knitting?

I was about 10 or 11 when my mum managed to get me to knit something other than holes. Crochet has only been a skill I acquired in the last 5 or 6 years, while working here!

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

Isn’t it the dream job?! Spending all day amongst the colour! All the deliveries! Sharing my passion and enthusiasm with my lovely colleagues and all the amazing customers who oooh and aaah over the yarns just as much as me. Learning and sharing tips and tricks and skills. The smell of the wool. Helping someone find just the thing they were after and seeing the joy and excitement in their face. Sending off bundles of goodies with people who can’t wait to cast on. Drinking tea and eating biscuits with my colleagues every day. Getting excited about new patterns that arrive. Indulging my love of knitting and apparently that’s working?! Ok I need to stop. I love my job!

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

All of the things. Always a pair of socks (they don’t count as a project in my books), many baby things for my niece and nephew, an amigurumi dragon in mustard yellow 4ply, a flax light in a new 4ply tweed from Dye Bath, and I’m still working on an intense cabled sweater, in a gorgeous burnt orange Bluefaced Leicester DK from Erika Knight – so dreamy.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

My Best Friends Wedding. I laugh and I cry every time.

Fave pudding?

You can’t beat homemade bread and butter pudding with custard.

A quote that you love…?

Dress like you’re going somewhere better later

And alas I have too many projects in my head that I can’t wait to start.

Closing note

Now living in Bath to help and support Laura with fabulous “wool”, we are enjoying the delights of our grandsons Joseph and Ted. We cannot imagine not being here as the boys are growing up so quickly and are so unbelievably precious. Words fail me! The joy and love is priceless. (*Laura sobs in the corner*)

Likes

My new glasses (eat your heart out Elton!) A cup of tea with my feet up in the garden listening to the birds chatting. Better still with a delicious home baked cupcake from Jemma.

But first and last the love of all my family and simply being together -albeit crawling around on all fours playing peekaboo or hide and seek- and chatting about everyone’s day. Such joy and contentment is bliss!

How old were you when you started knitting?

I don’t remember learning to knit but made clothes for my dolls early on and always had a craft project on the go.

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

Chatting with our lovely customers about what they’re working on and their next project (because we’re all thinking about what to make next aren’t we?).

To help people find the perfect yarn and see them leave with an excited spring in their step is pretty high on the job satisfaction scale.

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

A French Market Bag in craft cotton, which I love crocheting with.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

Sandra Bullock plays no nonsense women, each one out of their comfort zone in The Proposal and Speed. Great fun!

Fave pudding?

Pancakes, plain and simple, why only on one day of the year?

A quote that you love…?

From my gardening hero, Monty Don “Find what you love and do that” and also “Be untidy”!

Catherine – Sales Advisor

How old were you when you started knitting?

I learned to knit and spin yarn when I was 23 on a weekend course at a local farm, and I was hooked! It took me another year to save enough for a spinning wheel, and several more years until I branched out into crochet, but now I love all things fibrey.

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

Everything! Especially chatting wool with my amazing colleagues and friends, and our lovely customers.

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

Too many things!

What’s your favourite film of all time?

Can I have two?! The Princess Bride and the Labyrinth!

Fave pudding?

Baked chocolate cheesecake 😍

A quote that you love…?

Be an Optimist Prime not a Negatron!

Jane – Sales Advisor

How old were you when you started knitting?

I taught myself to crochet at about 10 by playing around with a plastic hook and acrylic yarn free on the front of a ‘woman’s own’. From the same magazine I learnt to knit.

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

The best thing about working in ‘Wool’ is being surrounded by lovely fibre in all its many guises and sharing time with fellow lovers of sticks and twine.

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

I am a process knitter so have many projects going, on both hooks and needles. Always socks. Always a blanket or two and many shawls and jumpers.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

Educated in film appreciation by my actor loving son I could name many favourite films. Today, I will go with The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Fave pudding?

Puddings… mmmmm… Queen of Puddings

A quote that you love…?

“One moment can change a day, one day can change a life and one life can change the world” – Buddha

Lotus – Sales Advisor

How old were you when you started knitting?

I vaguely remember learning at school aged 8 but there was a bit of a gap until I started again aged 27.

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

When I visited the shop for the first time as a customer, I said “Wouldn’t this be my perfect dream job?” – it’s one of those jobs people daydream about.

And yes it is everything you imagine it to be and more, but if I had to choose one best element, it would be that I am surrounded by people who love and is passionate about the *magic* of turning fluffy string into actual things!

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

I’m really into making socks right now. I try not to have too many things on the go but come winter, no doubt there’ll be a few jumpers in the works for Clover.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

300. (of THIS IS SPARTA! fame) I just think each second and each frame is so beautiful, like an oil painting.

Fave pudding?

A good ol’ fashioned trifle!

A quote that you love…?

“For the same price, buy the red skirt.” A Korean proverb and my life mantra – everything that can be made beautiful should be beautiful. Life is too short to not surround yourself in loveliness.

Clover – Yarn Tester

How old were you when you started knitting?

My lack of thumbs didn’t stop me from sitting on every project Lotus made since I was the size of a guinea pig.

What’s your favourite thing about working in a wool shop?

I am constantly visited by my adoring fans.

What’s on your needles/hook right now?

I have most recently commandeered a full double bed sized crocheted blanket.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

I don’t watch films, I *am* cinema.

Fave pudding?

My fancy German import dog chew, peanut butter flavour.

A quote that you love…?

“Why yes, I am a good boy. Thank you for noticing.” Clover ©️2020
